🥄 Are we allergic to Food or Poison?

👋 Hey BNDK Fam,

Can we agree that food isn’t what it used to be?

More and more kids are being diagnosed with allergies, sensitivities, and chronic health issues, and we’re left wondering: are we allergic to food… or to what’s being done to it? 🤔

At BNDK Table, we’ve seen firsthand how removing ultra-processed, additive-heavy foods made a world of difference in our home — fewer stomach aches, fewer tantrums, fewer emergency runs for meds.

The sad truth? Many of the everyday snacks, boxed dinners, and even “healthy” drinks marketed to kids are filled with preservatives, dyes, seed oils, and artificial flavors that our bodies don’t recognize. Our immune systems aren’t overreacting to food — they’re reacting to the fake stuff inside of it.

So today we ask the hard question:

Are we feeding our families real nourishment… or cleverly disguised poison? 😬

But don’t worry — we’re not here to scare you. We’re here to equip you.

Let’s dig into what we can feed our families confidently.

REAL TALK:

You’re not crazy. You’re not paranoid. And you’re not being “extra” for reading ingredient labels.

You’re a parent doing what’s best for your family — and at BNDK Table, we see you. Check out what research has found regarding certain ingredients and additives in our food:

🚨 1. Artificial Additives & Preservatives

🔹Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

  • Issue: Linked to headaches, nausea, and metabolic dysfunction in sensitive individuals.

  • Research: Obesity Reviews (2013) found a correlation between MSG and increased body weight and metabolic disorders.

🔹Artificial Colors (e.g., Red 40, Yellow 5)

  • Issue: Linked to hyperactivity in children and possible carcinogenic effects.

  • Research: The Lancet (2007) found artificial colors and preservatives increased hyperactive behavior in children.

🔹Sodium Nitrite/Nitrate (found in deli meats, bacon)

  • Issue: Converts into nitrosamines, which are cancer-causing.

  • Research: World Health Organization (2015) classified processed meats as Group 1 carcinogens.

🧪 2. Pesticides & Herbicides

🔹Glyphosate (active ingredient in Roundup)

  • Issue: Potential endocrine disruptor; suspected link to cancer.

  • Research: International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, 2015) classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

🍞 3.Highly Processed Ingredients

🔹Refined Sugars & High Fructose Corn Syrup

  • Issue: Associated with obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes.

  • Research: JAMA Internal Medicine (2014) showed added sugars significantly increase the risk of heart disease.

🔹Hydrogenated Oils / Trans Fats

  • Issue: Increase LDL (bad cholesterol), lower HDL (good cholesterol), and promote inflammation.

  • Research: Banned in many countries after studies like the New England Journal of Medicine (2006) found a strong link to heart disease.

⚠️ 4. Food Sensitivities & Allergens

  • Common triggers: Dairy, Gluten, Soy, Corn, Eggs

  • Issue: These can lead to chronic inflammation, digestive issues, eczema, behavioral changes, and autoimmune flare-ups.

  • Research: Studies in Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology confirm the rising prevalence of non-IgE-mediated food sensitivities.

🧠 5. Ultra-Processed Foods & Mental Health

  • Issue: Diets high in ultra-processed food are linked to depression and anxiety.

  • Research: Psychiatry Research (2022) and Public Health Nutrition (2018) found direct links between poor diet quality and mental health struggles.

Summary:

We are not just eating food anymore — many common products are heavily processed substances with chemical additives, preservatives, and synthetic flavorings. This shift has contributed to:

  • Gut microbiome disruption

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Inflammatory diseases (IBS, eczema, arthritis)

  • Metabolic syndrome

  • Cognitive decline
